SEG Partners with GetFTR to Enhance Research Discovery
The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) has recently expanded its commitment to providing streamlined access to their cutting-edge research by joining GetFTR, a cross industry initiative designed to provide trusted pathways to research. With the support of Atypon, their journals platform partner, SEG is now fully integrated into both aspects of the GetFTR service – Publisher and Integrator – greatly enhancing both content visibility in discovery tools and alerting readers on their platform to which references are available. SEG qualifies for GetFTR’s free tier offering (for publishers with less than 40,000 journal DOIs) and as Atypon offer GetFTR integration with no license fee, there have been no additional costs for SEG to bear.
Boosting Visibility through Publisher Services
By integrating with GetFTR’s Publisher service, SEG’s content benefits from improved discoverability on all platforms that have integrated with GetFTR. This includes major academic platforms such as Scopus, Dimensions, CAS SciFinder and more. Additionally, for users who have downloaded the GetFTR Browser Extension, SEG content is more discoverable on any website where a DOI is used. This means that researchers looking for geophysical studies can now more easily find and access SEG’s content directly from search results, related articles, citations, social media, newspapers and pretty much anywhere their content is referenced.
For SEG, this is an important development. Smaller publishers sometimes find it difficult to access the tools that bigger publishers are able to deploy to increase discoverability. As SEG benefits from GetFTR’s free tier service, it means they gain access to powerful discovery tools without stretching their budget. Atypon also played a crucial role in this integration. Known for their commitment to helping their publishers access and benefit from the latest technologies, Atypon ensured SEG was signed up for both parts of GetFTR’s service, providing a comprehensive approach to improving content discoverability and access.
“Atypon has been fantastic in helping us get on board with GetFTR,” said Sarah Weathers from SEG. “As a smaller publisher, we really appreciate the opportunity to access services like this without additional costs. It’s great to know our content is easier to find and access across various platforms”
Enhancing Research Connections through Integrator Services
SEG also benefits from GetFTR’s Integrator service. Now, researchers viewing SEG’s references are guided to other publishers’ content via signposting and smart links, allowing streamlined access to related papers from article citations. GetFTR links will appear when the reader is entitled to the content via their institutional subscriptions, or because it is free or open access. This approach not only helps SEG provide more value to researchers but also fosters a more comprehensive research experience for their readers.
Sarah Weathers from SEG said “it’s an essential component of helping researchers move through the “next steps” in their journey”
Atypon’s Commitment to Publisher Success
The success of SEG’s integration with GetFTR is supported by Atypon’s client-led and hands-on approach. Atypon has always emphasized supporting the research journey by helping publishers embrace technology solutions that enhance both their visibility and researcher engagement.
“It’s all about our commitment to the research journey and helping our clients,” Oliver Rickard from Atypon explained. “By signing publishers, like SEG, up for both the Publisher and Integrator services, we’re ensuring they get the best possible results from our partnership with GetFTR. This means being discovered more widely and helping researchers easily access the next piece of information they need. It’s a successful strategy and one we will be pursuing with other clients.”
This strategy aligns with Atypon’s mission to support smaller publishers in navigating the digital research landscape and ensuring they are not left behind.

Looking Ahead: Strengthening the Research Ecosystem
In the rapidly evolving world of academic publishing, this partnership reflects SEG’s commitment to ensuring their research continues to play a pivotal role in the scientific conversation.
“We’re thrilled to see SEG onboard and benefiting from both the Publisher and Integrator services,” said Dianne Benham from GetFTR. “Our goal has always been to provide streamlined access to research and help publishers of all sizes benefit from more discoverable content. Working with Atypon, we’re able to provide SEG with the tools to make a real difference to their researchers.”
