Product Update

GetFTR Integrator API: New Features

The latest version of the GetFTR API provides the following benefits for discovery tools, scholarly collaboration networks (SCNs), and other integrators:

  • Faster entitlement decisions where the publisher has shared their entitlements with GetFTR
  • Links to 30 million OA DOIs, from both publishers that participate in GetFTR and from other reliable public sources
  • Retraction & Update information, so that discovery tools can signal to researchers where documents have been updated – see below for more information

Can all discovery tools, SCNs, and others that use GetFTR please migrate to the latest version of the integrator API v2.4, as we will deprecate the current API soon

Retraction and Errata: Information Available for all Discovery Tools

Our collaboration with Crossref and Retraction Watch provides retraction and errata information to researchers at the point of discovery, helping them make informed decisions about the research they are reading. Researchers will see additional buttons indicating whether the article has been updated or retracted, and the reason why, with the GetFTR Browser Extension being the first to make use of this new feature. Please contact us if you are a discovery tool or SCN that integrates with GetFTR and would like this feature enabled.

GetFTR Browser Extension: Buttons for all Websites

GetFTR buttons will soon be added to all sites where a DOI is located which will further extend the reach of GetFTR. This means that anyone who has installed the GetFTR Browser Extension will see both entitlements buttons (subscribed content, open access, or free) and retraction and errata buttons on all websites where there is a DOI – see example of GetFTR buttons on Wikipedia references below. The buttons provide summary information in the hover state, and when clicked provide more information about changes to the document in timeline format.

We encourage all publishers and librarians to promote the GetFTR Browser Extension through your networks to ensure your researchers are able to easily access the content that has been made available to them, wherever they discover it. We have a number of resources to help you promote the service, including an animation showing how easy it is to install!

Support for Open Access Publishers

We have extended our support for open access publishers by automatically signaling the availability of their content and highlighting retraction and errata information at the point of discovery. We have written more about this service in a blog post published this week.

Product Roadmap and Future Directions

A reminder of what we’re working on for the rest of the year:

  • Journal Transfers: Check entitlements with current and previous publishers, to support perpetual rights
  • KBART Analysis: Identify if GetFTR can play a role in streamlining the KBART process
  • Usage Reports: Add click data to integrator and publisher reports in the portal; Support on and off platform usage aggregation for syndication arrangements

GetFTR Integrator Webinar

Last month we held a webinar for current and prospective discovery tools that are considering integrating with GetFTR. We would like to extend our thanks to Eva Winer at the American Psychological Association and Chirag Jay Patel, at Cactus Communications for taking time to share their experiences of GetFTR.

Eva demonstrated how GetFTR adds value to an A&I service by directing researchers directly to the full text when they are entitled to read it. She revealed that they had sent nearly 2.5 million DOI requests to GetFTR in the last year, and PsychInfo user research indicated their customers highly value the GetFTR service.

Jay shared his insights demonstrating how GetFTR has improved engagement (2x) and retention (3x) rates for R Discovery’s 3 million registered users worldwide. You can read the full case study on our blog.

And if you missed it, you can watch the webinar on demand and view the slides. Please share with your networks and get in touch if you would like to know more about integrating with GetFTR.

Case Study: Thieme’s Experience of Integrating with GetFTR

Thieme, a leading provider of healthcare information and services, recently joined GetFTR and shared their experience of developing an API for their own platform. They shared why they thought partnering with GetFTR would enhance engagement and visibility. You can read our interview with them here.
